The organizer of the trip, an Ithaca social worker named Mike Ellis, is basically a saint (Mike, if you're reading this, just shut up. It's true.) His organization takes no overhead (compared to some other famous relief organizations I could mention who skim close to half of your donation for lobbying efforts and high 6-figure executive salaries)
Perhaps more significantly, they see themselves as servants to the people of the 7th Ward, not outside experts gonna tell the poor locals what to do. This is a partnership of love, not a handout program that diminishes the recipients.
4. Howie CAN'T Steal Any of the Money
To keep things squeaky clean (not that you've ever had reason to distrust an offer made on the Internet ;), all donations will be funneled directly to the National Heritage Foundation, rather than to my personal bank account. The National Heritage Foundation will then cut a check directly to St. John #5 Faith Church in New Orleans, who will go straight to the building supply stores and get the stuff they need to return their community members to safe housing (after almost 3 years!!!)

The Rebuilding Project: Love Knows No Bounds and St John #5 Faith Church
The Jam Session came about because of an email I received last week from Mike Ellis, an Ithaca social worker who first went down to New Orleans in December 2005 and was shocked and outraged at the lack of government support and the ineptitude and apathy of some very big non-profit organizations.
Upon his return to Ithaca, he vowed not to forget, not to slide back into his comfortable life far away from the turmoil of New Orleans. He helped found Love Knows No Bounds, a group made up entirely of volunteers who organize fundraising and trips to New Orleans to rebuild their sister community in the 7th Ward.
So anyway, Mike sent me an email on March 7, letting me know about the next trip of Love Knows No Bounds, and telling me how I could help.

Dear family and friends,
Happy almost-Spring! I hope that life is treating you well and the sun is shining where you are.
I am writing to you at this time to invite you to contribute to an amazing opportunity to make some dreams come true in New Orleans this April. As you surely know, there are many people from New Orleans who continue to be displaced from their homes, even 2 1/2 years after Hurricane Katrina. Their greatest wish is to move home and begin the process of healing and moving on with their lives.
This April, I am leading a crew of over 50 volunteers from Ithaca, NY to the 7th Ward of New Orleans, a culturally rich but economically underprivileged area of the city. Our crew will rebuild homes, deliver furniture and other needed supplies to residents, plant gardens, connect residents with needed health services, and more. We have the energy, the people power, the tools, and the relationships with folks in the 7th Ward to make this a phenomenal success. The only missing ingredient is that we need financial support so that we can purchase the building supplies for our volunteers to work with.
If it is at all possible for you, would you consider making a financial contribution to this effort? Any amount would be deeply appreciated. To put it in perspective, $5 buys a protective mask, $15 buys a box of nails, $25 buys a sheet of sheetrock, $50 buys us enough paint to refinish a room, and so on.
